Washington, DC (November 28, 2012) – The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) reminds you that early registration discounts for its 2013 Annual Conference end on Monday, December 17. Themed “Audacious Leadership,” the 2013 Conference will take place March 11-13, 2013, at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel in San Diego, CA, and will feature interactive sessions and activities aimed at highlighting and inspiring impact-oriented visionary leadership in the 21st century learning environment. Washington, DC (October 29, 2012) – With Hurricane Sandy barreling up the East Coast, the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) today sent to K-12 school district technology leaders information and tools to aid in disaster recovery, as part of its IT Crisis Preparedness Initiative. Launched in 2008 after Hurricane Katrina and other catastrophic events, the initiative aims to help K-12 technology leaders ensure that their schools and school districts are prepared for disaster before, during and after it strikes.

Managing the Risks of Personal Devices.” The latest in a series of mini-reports that explore emerging technologies and trends, this new report examines today’s advancing Bring Your Own (BYO) initiatives and related safety and security risks facing school districts nationwide.

“Apps and mobile devices are being utilized more and more in education, forcing schools to reexamine their mobile device policies,” said CoSN CEO Keith Krueger. “These continuous advancements are creating an unprecedented set of safety and security challenges for school leaders, so it’s imperative that leaders are prepared and have at their fingertips a set of technical solutions to prevent data breaches and protect personal devices.”

San Diego, CA (June 26, 2012) — The New Media Consortium (NMC), the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), and the International Society for Technology in Education have released the NMC Horizon Report > 2012 K-12 Edition and are releasing the accompanying CoSN Horizon Report: 2012 K-12 Edition Toolkit in a special session at the ISTE 2012 Conference.

The annual K-12-focused research project generates considerable interest every year when it is released and has built a global following. At the ISTE conference this year in San Diego, the three principal investigators behind the report – NMC CEO Larry Johnson, CoSN CEO Keith R. Krueger, and ISTE Deputy CEO Leslie Conery – are discussing the Report, the Toolkit, and their impact in a landmark session.

This fourth annual edition of the report examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative expression within the environment of primary and secondary education. Education and technology leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders in educational institutions need practical, forward-thinking information that addresses opportunities for teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. Washington, DC (April 26, 2012) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today released two North America working papers on mobile learning.  The papers, written by UNESCO in collaboration with the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), are titled “Turning on Mobile Learning in North America” and “Mobile Learning for Teachers in North America: Exploring the Potential of Mobile Technologies to Support Teachers and Improve Practice.” They are part of UNESCO’s larger Working Paper Series on Mobile Learning, which scans the globe to provide concrete examples of how mobile technologies, thanks largely to their ubiquity and affordability, can respond to unique educational challenges; supplement and enrich formal schooling; and make learning everywhere more accessible, equitable and personalized. The papers were co-authored by Jennifer Fritschi, PhD, and Mary Ann Wolf, PhD, for UNESCO and CoSN.

The report, Making Progress: Rethinking State and School District Policies Concerning Mobile Technologies and Social Media, was produced by CoSN and the FrameWorks Institute. Collaborating national partners include the American Association of School Administrators, Common Sense Media, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Education Association, the National Writing Project, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the Student Press Law Center and the Technology Leadership Network of the National School Boards Association.

Washington, DC (February 16, 2012) – As of last year, there were more than five billion mobile phone subscriptions in the world, including most, if not all, educators in developed and developing countries. However, many schools still forbid mobile phone use, citing it as a disruptive and distracting tool in the classroom. The 2012 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) International Symposium, themed mLearning: Exploring the Power of Mobility to Transform Learning, will explore key questions educators and policymakers need to confront on the issue of mobile learning (or mLearning), including: Why, when and how can or should mobile devices be used in education?   • Implementation and Selection Approaches Toward SIS/LMS Solutions
Gartner, Inc. requested input from a broad group of educators, including district leaders, school leaders, technology/IT leaders and teachers in the U.S. K-12 education community, on how data housed in student information systems (SIS) and learning management systems (LMS) can be used to improve teaching and learning. Each report provides key findings and next steps for the K-12 education and vendor communities to consider.

Washington, DC (January 5, 2012) – The Consortium for School Networking’s (CoSN’s) Acceptable Use Polices (AUP) in a Web 2.0 & Mobile Era: A Guide for School Districts has been awarded the 2011 Downes Prize. The prize is awarded annually by Canadian online learning and new media researcher Stephen Downes, who is also the author of the OLDaily e-newsletter. The award, which Downes began giving in 2010, recognizes one online learning resource each year that is widely regarded by the online learning community. CoSN released its AUP guide in February 2011.
