CoSN's Work on Online CoPs

epic-ed
CoSN launched Access4Ed.net in 2011 as part of a three-year initiative, Connected Online Communities of Practice, funded by the U.S. Department of Education under contract with the American Institutes for Research in partnership with five organizations, including CoSN.

In 2011, CoSN partnered with four leading education associations on Access4Ed.net, an online community of practice focused on innovative approaches to providing access to technology in K–12 districts and schools. In August 2012, CoSN is expanding that partnership, working with the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University on an expanded community: epic-ed.org.  epic-ed.org focuses on digital transitions across schools and districts as they incorporate mobile technologies, digital learning resources and instructional practices that transform teaching and learning.  The community provides access to exemplary practice, opportunities to collaborate with educators and educational leaders focused on the same issues, and the ability to work in cohorts of similar districts to foster collegiality and success.

The online community of practice serves district technology leaders, technology integration specialists, superintendents, school boards, principals, teachers and educational service agencies, and many other education stakeholders. Join the community and the conversation.

In addition to the Friday Institute, CoSN’s partnering organizations in epic-ed.org are:
  • American Association of School Administrators (AASA)
  • National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)
  • National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
  • National School Boards Association (NSBA)

Closing the Gap: Turning SIS/LMS Data into Action CoP

CoSN is collaborating with AASA and Gartner, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on a project titled Closing the Gap: Turning SIS/LMS Data into Action. Sixteen districts in that project are participating in online communities of practice focused on two themes, which could provide discussion fodder for other online communities of practice:
  • Bridging SIS & LMS in new ways: Exploring the use of formative data to inform classroom instruction and standards-based content.
  • Growing a data-rich culture: Creating a learning ecosystem that fosters continuous use of data to strengthen instruction.

Participatory Learning in Schools: Leadership and Policy

Leading Edge School District Cadre
CoSN, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and others, is working with thirteen school districts with regard to their use of digital media and student owned mobile devices at school to form a “cadre” and participate in an online Community of Practice to draw support, information, and resources from peers who share similar goals. The effort will distill concrete “real world” knowledge, experience and best practices from the participating teams so that we can assist other districts who wish to move in the same direction.
