The new digital divide is growing wider as low income families cannot afford high speed Internet access – an increasingly essential element for 21st century learning.  During the spring of 2012, Connect2Compete – a national coalition of all the cable companies -- launched a pilot program in San Diego, CA to provide high speed home access to school lunch eligible families Join this webinar to hear about the program and the plans to expand its program to all 50 states in the coming months.

Zach Leverenz,  Chief Executive Officer
Connect 2Compete

In September 2012, Zach Leverenz became the first Chief Executive Officer of Connect2Compete (C2C), a national organization designed to help narrow the digital divide by making high-speed Internet access, computers, education and jobs training more accessible for Americans without home connectivity. Zach previously served as the CEO of Middle East Education through Technology (MEET). In partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he led the organization through a period of substantial growth, securing new commitments from public and private donors such as HP, Google, and Mercy Corps-USAID. Zach also spent six years at PeacePlayers International, where he served as a founding director and managing director for the organization’s programs in Cyprus,  Northern Ireland, South Africa, and New Orleans, LA. He holds a B.A. from Dickinson College and an Ed.M. from the Harvard University, where he was awarded a Reynolds Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship by Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership.  He serves on the Board of Directors at MEET.

Chief Information and Technology Officer, Darryl LaGacé, is responsible for the implementation of the district¹s i21 interactive classroom initiative, an innovative design for the transformation of teaching and learning to reflect the needs of today¹s 21st century student. With the passage of Proposition S in November 2008, Mr. LaGacé championed the opportunity to revolutionize education in 7000 SDUSD classrooms and impact the learning of 130,000 students.  Focusing on today¹s digital-age student, the essential tools of the i21 suite pair interactive white board technology with the teacher tablet PC and a 1:1 access ratio of student iPads and Netbooks district wide to increase the ability to teach and to optimize access and engagement for all students.

Serving two terms as president of the California Educational Technology Professionals Association, he provided leadership in the transformation of learning using technology throughout the state. Mr. LaGacé is the recipient of numerous awards including the Computerworld Award for Innovative Educational Technology, the Civic Excellence Award for his work in K-12 education reform, Cable in the Classroom Leaders in Learning Award, the National Withrow Award named for Frank Withrow, a longtime pioneer and champion of the uses of technology in K-12 education.  He has also been honored by and named as a Laureate of the Smithsonian Institute for his work Transforming Education through Technology and was recently honored at the San Diego Information Technology Executive of the Year awards.

Johnnie Giles, Executive Director, External Affairs, Comcast Corporation

Vice President, Government Affairs, Comcast Cable

Johnnie Giles serves as Executive Director of External Affairs for Comcast Corporation and Vice President of External Affairs for Comcast Cable, where he is responsible for developing policy positions and advocacy strategies in support of the company’s various lines of business. Additionally, he serves as the principal interface between Comcast and the national Asian Pacific Islander community organizations and supports Comcast’s Legislative Affairs group in working with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Mr. Giles previously served as Regional Vice President of Government Affairs for Comcast’s California region, where he spearheaded all aspects of Comcast’s governmental affairs activities and legislative advocacy efforts in California.

Mr. Giles received an MBA from Pepperdine University and a BA from the University of California-Berkeley.  He and his wife Nellie reside in the Philadelphia area.
