Digital Inclusion Facts
Economically disadvantaged families increasingly lack the ability to use technology to seek jobs, to access online government resources and increasingly their children are unable to connect to formal education opportunities. In the US there are nearly 27 million families without a home computer or connection to the Internet (312 million total US population). Globally, of 1.8 billion households worldwide, 0.6 billion have Internet access and 0.7 billion have a PC[1]. Strong disparities also exist between countries: In South Asia, for instance, only 6.4% of homes have a computer and 4.3% have Internet access compared to 77.1% and 74.6% in the U.S.[2].
While computing devices in schools is growing, technology is not ubiquitous in most classrooms around the world. For example, according to MDR Research only 13% of US classrooms have a one device/per child technology environment. And, if you are from a U.S. family of modest income ($30,000 or less annually) you have 50% less likelihood of having broadband access at home compared to families with incomes over $75,000. Only 28.75% of U.S. population subscribed to broadband in 2011 compared to 8.42% worldwide according to ITU[3]. Moreover, available Internet bandwidth per Internet user remainsvery different between regions; with on average almost 90’000 bit/s of bandwidth per user in Europe compared with 2’000 bit/s per user in Africa[4]
