NYE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL| 12:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Nye Elementary, a 2010 California Distinguished School, is a diverse learning community that encourages and empowers students. Nye prepares students for life by combining a solid academic foundation and an understanding of the technological skills necessary to function in the modern, global society. The roll-out of the i21 Initiative in San Diego Unified, where every classroom is outfitted with an interactive whiteboard, a voice amplification system, an advanced-model document camera, and a class set of netbooks or tablets, has allowed the Nye staff to take teaching and learning to the next level. Every student leaves Nye prepared to use the rapidly changing improvements in technology to his or her advantage.
Classroom teachers collaborate with the site's Technology Coordinator in planning projects that promote and enhance content knowledge while closely following the scope and sequence of the state's Technology Standards. Teachers here know that it is not about taking what has always been done and putting it in a digital format, but about utilizing the technology to change the way they teach to ensure students are challenged to think critically and creatively and are able to apply their knowledge in a variety of ways. Since continual improvement and innovation are key elements of success, the professional growth of the staff is fostered. In-service is a priority for all of the staff, in order to educate them in current teaching practices and technology innovations. Grade level collaboration ensures that instructional techniques and strategies are continually adjusted and modified to meet the changing needs of students.
