Learning has never been confined solely to what takes place within the four wall of a classroom. Beyond the doors of the school house, young people learn as they encounter people, undertake experiences, and study the larger world around them.
In recent years, the availability of digital media has dramatically escalated the opportunities for learning outside of school, and as a consequence, the gulf between informal (out-of-school) and formal (in-school) learning has widened. This presents educators with two challenges. One is to take full advantage of the growing number of learning resources that students use outside of schools for invigorating the learning environment inside schools. The other challenge is to treat the child’s formal and informal learning in a seamless manner rather than as two disparate entities.
CoSN's 10th Annual International Symposium will bring together an invited group of education leaders, policy makers and key thought-leaders from around the globe to explore perspectives, policies, and practices that can connect the two worlds of young people into a cohesive learning environment. During this participatory event attendees will hear compelling examples, take part in discussions, and work to develop a “Sense of the Symposium”document.
