 CoSN-Gartner TCO Case Studies
Eight comprehensive TCO case studies have been conducted at schools representing a mix of district size, urban/suburban/rural locations and varied socio-economic communities. The original four studies, conducted by Gartner were used to prove the concept and were without the benefit of user survey to collect indirect labor. The four studies by CoSN did include a user survey to collect indirect labor.
The high-low values from these case studies for each result metric are displayed in the CoSN-Gartner TCO tool for comparison to the TCO tool user assessment results.

Gartner TCO Case Studies

California - Urban District with 140,000 Students 
Utah - Suburban District with 48,000 Students 
Minnesota - Rural District with 4,000 Students
Pennsylvania - Rural District with 2,500 Students

CoSN TCO Case Studies

Missouri - Rural district with 450 students 
Texas - Suburban district with 35,500 students 
Virginia - Suburban district with 166,000 students
Wisconsin - Urban district with 20,500 students

One-to-one CoSN TCO Case Studies

In addition to the eight case studies referenced above, CoSN conducted case studies of three districts that were in the first or second year of their one-to-one student computing initiative. These studies evaluated the costs of the one-to-one programs and attempted to understand the expected benefits. The One-to-one Case Studies Overview provides more information about the process.

 School & Other Submitted TCO Studies

CoSN is actively seeking user-submitted K-12 TCO studies. If you have conducted a TCO assessment and would like to share your results and conclusions, please let us know; we'll help.

  • Submitted by Bob Nelson:
    This report reviews the savings that can result from small districts pulling together within their region to share student information applications over a regional network. Note that the CoSN-Gartner TCO tool was not used, and the focus is on budget line items.
  • Submitted by Michele Cooper from the Denver School of Science and Technology:
    DSST is an innovative 451-student public charter high school (grades 9 – 12) with a one-to-one student computing program. They are located on a 10-acre site in the newly redeveloped Stapleton neighborhood in northeast Denver. Read more about their one-to-one student computing evaluation and TCO assessment.
