 Service Providers
Service providers is a broad term for outside organizations that provide IT services used by schools. Service providers include services such as educational service districts, application service providers, internet and other telecom service providers, cloud computing and outsourced sevices.

Outsourcing
A Gartner white paper co-authored by Bill Rust and Rich Kaestner outlines drivers and suggested approaches for outsourcing: IT Outsourcing for K-12 and Small Colleges
The main drivers for outsourcing IT functions in K-12 schools and small colleges driven from the need for:
- Attracting and keeping additional qualified IT personnel in competition with the commercial sectors
- Improving service levels (e.g., student and teacher support outside normal school hours)
- Freeing faculty and staff to focus on the core mission of education
- Acquiring the expertise to exploit new information technologies.
