Leading Edge School Districts Cadre Activities

Communities of Practice

Communication, sharing, and collaboration among the districts in each Cadre will be facilitated by a Community of Practice (CoP) designed superficially for this twenty-month Project. The Cadre will provide an opportunity for members to develop linkages, share resources, and serve as a “think tank” for participants. The operating procedures and agreements for appropriate use of the Cadre will be developed in concert with the Cadre members at the Washington D.C. meeting. Those procedures (with any requested modifications) will be used for Cadre 2.

Cadre members will commit to:

  • Identify and recruit a leadership team consisting of three senior-level administrators (i.e. superintendent/deputy superintendent, chief technology officer, or chief academic officer).

  • Identify a primary contact for the leadership team. Primary contact will monitor at least once a week the activity on the Leading Edge Community of Practice (LECoP) and conduct follow-up activities if necessary.

  • Submit information on the rubric for Leading-Edge School Districts.

  • Attend meeting in Washington, D.C.

  • Work with other LECoP participants to establish priorities and timelines.

  • Work with LECoP participants to decide public and private spaces in the CoP platform that will facilitate discussion.

  • Work with other LECoP participants and leadership team to identify resources.

  • Share information through the use of recordings, posts, online conversations on their efforts to integrate digital media in learning.

  • Provide feedback, suggestions and support for implementing large-scale dramatic change.

  • Support the assessment of needs and practices of participants, as well as tools and features of the LECoP.

  • Support the production of Progress Reports. Progress reports will be bi-annual concise syntheses of “lessons learned” as well as promising and best case findings that should be shared with the wider professional community.

Going to Scale

While a primary purpose of this Project is to provide support for the leading edge districts that will comprise the two Cadres, it is also intended that the Project’s impact is expected to go beyond the twenty-four districts.  The leading edge districts participating in the Cadres will provide information that will assist others in making similar progress.

CoSN commits to:
  • Implement two Webinars focused on key aspects of school transformation issues. Preliminary discussion on this will occur at the Washington D.C. meeting.

  • Convene a two week online invitational Forum on the topic of “going to scale.” This colloquium will share information produced by the cadre and other activities associated with this the CoSN Participatory Learning Initiative. In addition, to lead cadre members and other districts invitees, national and state education leaders and thought leaders on the topic of innovation and organizational change will be invited.

  • Present with LECoP members compelling educational sessions at national and state education conferences. We particularly want to involve cadre members in presentations and will build a Leading-Edge Speakers Bureau.

  • Develop articles in education trade publications including newsletters, journals, and magazines.

  • Produce progress reports, which will be concise syntheses of “lesson learned” as well as promising and best case findings, will be shared with the wider professional community.

  • Make use of appropriate social networking tools such as Twitter, blogs, podcasts, streaming videos, and other digital media to share the cadre’s lessons learned.

  • Adapt  Transformative Leadership with Web 2.0 (Self-Assessment Instrument) to enable district leaders to identify where they are on the continuum of applying the tools of digital media  for teaching and learning in their school district.
