Case Studies
CoSN is interested in compiling information about best practices and developing case studies of small school districts and their use of technology. Please share your story by completing our Case Study Form.
A Rural Penn. School District
This 1,800 student district was experiencing a slow decline in student population, but the superintendent did not let a low tax base distract his vision for providing equitable access to technology across the district. Improvements had been made in lower grades and middle school, but the high school was sorely lacking. A process was used to research and investigate and then convince the board to implement a one-to-one program in grades 9-12.
Financing was achieved through vendor negotiations, a leasing agreement, state program improvement dollars and grants and some reallocation of existing resources. The district addressed teacher training, created a student peer support team and added staff. As a result, the district has realized 20th century classrooms, equitable access of technology, improved parent communication, cost savings, increased student motivation and achievement, improved student organizational skills, collaboration among students and teachers and enhanced curricula.''
A Rural Texas School District
Giddings, Texas is a small town located in the middle of a very large and very rural state. “We’re pretty much an agricultural, oil and gas type community,” says Michael S. Kuhrt, superintendent of the school district. The 3.6-square-mile town has a population of about 5,500 and an independent school system with approximately 1,900 students and 155 teachers serving over 260 square miles.
Two years ago the Giddings Independent School District had the foresight to realize that the future of education required technology to deliver a 21st century learning environment. By connecting students, faculty, and staff, Giddings had a vision of delivering new learning opportunities based on connectivity and real-time interaction for lifelong learning and the opportunity to help its community thrive.
