Accomplishments & Activities
February - May 2009
- Concluded the data gathering of the National survey in
U.S. public school districts. Nearly 1,200 school administrators
participated (389 superintendents, 441 technology directors, and 359
curriculum directors).
- Conducted a Face-to Face meeting
with Advisory Committee Members in Austin, TX on March 9, 2009. The
Advisory Committee engaged in a discussion which was focused on
generating ideas for the second stage of the CoSN/MacArthur Project.
- Cheryl Lemke (Metiri Group) presented at CoSN’s 8th International Symposium preliminary findings of the National Survey.
- Announcement of preliminary findings at the 2009 CoSN’s Conference in Austin, TX.
- Launched
four online forums to enable the discussion and validation of findings
from the national survey. Groups included: CoSN board members, Web 2.0
Advisory Committee, ACSA members, ASCD members and CTO Committee
members. (April – June).
- Presented at ASCD Annual Conference (Orlando, FL).
- Wrote Article “Participatory Culture and Schools: Can We Get There From Here?” for Threshold Magazine 2009 Spring Edition.
- Wrote in the 2009 CoSN Compendium monograph, “Web 2.0 in Education: Policy, Practice and Progress”.
- Received
and reviewed national survey findings from Metiri Group. Reviewers
included CoSN Board and Web 2.0 Advisory Committee members.
- Produced report from the national survey findings, entitled “Leadership for Web2.0 in Education: Promise and Reality”.
- Conducted a Web Press Release on May 1, 2009. Participants included: Cheryl Lemke, James Bosco and Chip Kimball.
- Conducted
a webcast “Web 2.0 in Education: Policies & Leadership” under
CoSN’s webcast series. Presenters: James Bosco and David Jakes.

Conducted a Beta test of the national survey with 50 superintendents, chief technology officers and curriculum directors.
- Initiated a stratified random survey to ascertain how well 1,400 school district leaders understand what digital media is, how new media pertains to participatory culture, and if and how formal education should adapt to this new cultural reality.
- Presented at State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) ”Web 2.0 & Beyond: Essential Elements for K-12 Education”.
- Produced Focus Group Summary on educators’ awareness, understanding, and perspectives regarding the role, problems, and benefits of new media in formal education within a participatory culture context.
- Began planning for the implementation of collaborative tools to enable discussion and concurrent validation of the findings from the national survey and for the use of a collaborative work space to be used in developing an action plan to assist school districts in the effective use of Web 2.0 in teaching and learning.
- Developed Website for Web 2.0 in Schools: leadership & Policy Initiative.

Formed a seven member Advisory Committee of chief technology officers, superintendents and curriculum specialists.
- Provide a Media announcement of the project.
- Preliminary work on a literature review of existing policies regarding the use of Web 2.0.
- Conducted three focus groups with school superintendents, chief technology officers and curriculum directors.
- Developed
draft for the national survey to assess awareness, understanding and
perspectives about the use of Web 2.0 among educational administrators.
- Initiated
the development of a review/analysis of existing relevant empirical
data on the use of Web 2.0 applications by school aged children and
youth
- Developed
linkages and initiated cooperative relationship with AASA, ASCD,
ACSA(Association of California School Administrators) Common Sense
Media, MIT Project New Media Literacies, Pew Center on Internet and
America Life Project
