Today’s learning environment has dramatically changed with increasing ubiquitous access to technology and informal learning extending well beyond the classroom walls. A student-centered and digitally enabled learning environment is essential to improving student achievement.
With the support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and others, CoSN focuses on the implications of Digital Media and Learning (DML) for school district transformation. We have worked with district leaders on use of digital media in instruction and their needs and challenges in creating a technology-rich learning environment. Based on this research, CoSN collaborates with school administrators and thought leaders to develop resources to increase the capacity of district leaders to implement digital media and learning.
Using Innovation to Share Knowledge and Experience
CoSN works with 13 school districts that are already taking bold and innovative steps to implement policies and organizational changes to make effective use of social media, mobile technologies, and other Web 2.0 applications for classroom learning. They recognize that digital media has transformed where, how, and when learning occurs in contemporary society and understand the need for schools to adjust to a new world of learning. The original 13 school districts include:
Calcasieu Parish Public Schools, Lake Charles, LA
Mooresville Graded School District, Mooresville, NC
Chicago Public Schools, Chicago, IL
Oconomowoc Area School District, Oconomowoc, WI
Centennial School District, Warminster, PA
State College Area School District, State College, PA
Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax, VA
Stillwater Area Public School, Stillwater, MN
Inver Grove Heights Community Schools, Inver Grove Heights, MN
Trussville City Schools, Trussville, AL

Utilizing in-person sessions and an online community of practice, we are connecting these district leaders with their peers and sharing content, expertise, and support. We leverage this knowledge as often as possible in the form of resources for the education technology community which can be downloaded to the right.
