Cyber Security: How to Talk With Your Superintendent About the Unintelligible

October 6, 2004
1:00 - 2:00 PM. EST

Superintendents, School Board members, and other administrators seldom understand the intricacies and complexities of network security. But without at least a basic understanding they can't provide the support or leadership that they need to provide. How can we structure our conversations with non-technical leaders so that it leads to effective action plans - and their commitment to providing the required resources? This webcast will present a case study, review "Eight Questions A Superintendent Should Ask A CTO," and introduce the other tools created by CoSN's Cyber Security for the Digital District project.

Accessible Technologies for All Students

January 19, 2005
1:00 - 2:00 PM. EST

Assistive technologies have long been used to help meet the learning needs of students with disabilities. Many of the assistive technologies and related instructional practices which serve students with disabilities can be equally helpful in meeting the learning needs of all students. In many districts however, assistive technology and instructional technology are two entirely separate worlds. Given the achievement requirements of NCLB and the UDL (Universal Design for Learning) requirements in IDEA, assistive technology and instructional technology leaders must utilize their combined expertise and resources to provide improved opportunities for all students to achieve and succeed.

This Webcast will discuss the challenges inherent in establishing such cooperative relationships, as well as the strategies used to successfully bridge the gap in both small and large school districts between these two diverse educational sectors.

  • Bob Moore, Executive Director, Information Technology Services, Blue Valley Unified School District #229, KS (Moderator)
  • Dave Edyburn, Associate Professor, Department of Exceptional Education, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
  • Kristen Eichleay, Director, Boston Public Schools, Access Technology Center, Roxbury, MA
  • Janet Peters, Coordinator, Simon Technology Center, Minnesota's Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights (PACER)

In the dot-com bubble days of the late '90s, we were told that technology would transform everything - including education. On the other hand, we need to better utilize the awesome power of this tool. This Webcast will present several pioneers and thinkers who will discuss ways we can regain momentum and excitement about the ability of technology to improve teaching and learning.

  • Seymour Papert, PhD, Professor Emeritus, MIT Media Lab
