Implementing Open Source in K-12

May 16, 2007
1-2:00 pm EDT

Register Now!

Everyday we read and hear more about open source applications that could be used in the classroom and wonder if we should jump on the open source bandwagon. Learn about how innovative school districts have implemented open source programs at the classroom/desktop level, and what they have learned from the experience. Our session will consider specific examples of the "best" open source applications being used (e.g., Moodle, OpenOffice, Audacity, & GIMP), and how they are specifically integrated into the curricula. We'll also look at customization of open source software to meet special needs, and programs that are not widely used now but are likely to become significant in the near future.

  • Jim Klein, Director, Saugus Union School District (CA)

Planning for the Inevitable: IT Disaster Preparedness

January 17, 2007
1-2:00 pm EST

When there is the unexpected disaster of any kind, school personnel, students, parents and communities expect to rely on communication and critical services the district provides and therefore the technology that supports them. Disaster recovery of IT-related operations and information is critical to the 24/7 operations of your district and its overall business continuity planning. This strong reliance on technology presents significant challenges to today’s school technology leader. The time to plan and prepare for a disaster is before the event is imminent. Much can be learned from the experiences of individuals, schools and districts who have developed and tested plans and from those recently experiencing disasters. What preparations were made? What worked or needed modification in testing or in an actual disaster? What would they recommend to others now? Best practices will be explored and suggestions for effective preparations will be shared.

  • Ed Zaiontz, Executive Director, Information Services, Round Rock ISD (TX) (Moderator)
  • Sheryl Abshire, Administrative Coordinator of Technology, Calcasieu Parish School System (LA)

What Does Internet2 Mean for K-12?

April 18, 2007
3-4:00 pm EDT

On the horizon since 1996, Internet 2 is a worldwide, high speed network created through a partnership of education, government and industry that provides unprecedented opportunities for communication and collaboration. Ask an educator what Internet 2 means and you get a pretty vague answer, even from technology directors! The CoSN Emerging Technologies Committee (ETC) has looked into Internet2 and will share the latest with technology directors and administrators. The presentation will highlight successful classroom projects, available resources and help getting started with Internet2 in your school. Join the CoSN ETC on April 18, from 3 to 4 p.m. EDT for the CoSN Webcast: "What Does Internet2 Mean for K-12?" (Free for CoSN members and available for a fee for non-members.) Our speakers include:

  • Jim Hirsch, Associate Superintendent for Technology, Plano Independent School District (TX) (Moderator)
