October 15, 2008 – The Growing Disconnect Between Educators and Students Around Technology
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Eastern

Presentation

Speak Up 2007 revealed a growing “digital disconnect” between students and their teachers and parents about the role of technology for learning, and how well schools are preparing students for the jobs of the future. Students continue to be on the leading edge in terms of adopting, modifying and re-using digital content and technology tools to enrich both their personal and educational lives. The students in many ways are far ahead of their teachers and parents not only in the sophistication of their technology use, but in the adoption of emerging technologies for learning purposes.

To learn more about the growing "digital disconnect" and discuss strategies for creating 21st century schools join Julie Evans, CEO-Project Tomorrow, as she discusses the Speak Up 2007 findings, including:

  • How do students, teachers and teachers regularly using technology for school and personal use?
  • What are the current trends in educational gaming, mobile devices and online learning?
  • What are the characteristics of a 21st century school?
  • How do we prepare students for jobs & careers of the future?

Karen Greenwood Henke, Author and Consultant, Nimble Press (Moderator)
Julie Evans, Chief Executive Officer, Project tomorrow – NetDay

November 19, 2008 – What Superintendents Need From YOU, the Technology Leader
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Eastern

Presentation

CoSN created the Empowering the 21st Century Superintendent Initiative in response to CTOs and CIOs across the country who felt that one of their biggest obstacles to utilizing technology systemically was that their superintendents did not have a vision for using technology to expand teaching and learning opportunities as well as meet the dynamic needs of today’s changing school systems. This initiative has produced a rich set of resources to help superintendents work more closely with technology leaders in their district to create such a vision. The webcast will review the key components of the resources with a particular emphasis on the Superintendent Toolkit that CoSN is sharing with superintendents across the U.S.

Dr. Chip Kimball, Superintendent, Lake Washington School District, WA and Co-Chair, Empowering the 21st Century Superintendent Initiative

January 21, 2009 - Long Tail Learners: How Technology Transforms Learning
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Eastern

In 2006, Chris Anderson defined a transformation in business with his book The Long Tail. Individualized learning, user-generated content, social networking, online gaming and virtual schools are indicators that the Long Tail is coming to education. Students have already discovered how to teach each other in social networks and multi-player gaming. Technology is transforming the learning institution. It will help us increase the wisdom of the crowds and scale personalized learning to meet the needs of the millions of students in the niches.

May 13, 2009 - Web 2.0 in Education: Policies & Leadership

Web 2.0 encompasses applications such as social networking, gaming, wikis, blogs, virtual reality that have found widespread use in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. Some educators contend that these applications can and should transform our schools. Other educators argue that they really have no – or little – place in schools. The webcast will provide a quick “bring up to speed” on the fast moving development of Web 2.0 learning resources.  CoSN, with funding provided by the John D. and Catherine T.  MacArthur Foundation is working on a project focused on the implications of Web 2.0 technologies for school policy and leadership issues.  This webcast will report on the findings from that project and will bring together experts who will provide a balanced perspective on the implications of Web 2.0 technologies for the conduct of schooling.

James Bosco, EdD, Co-Chair, CoSN International Committee & Emeritus Professor, Western Michigan University
