Data-Driven Decision Making
June 4, 2003

Educators are being asked to collect, analyze and report data to demonstrate that their efforts are resulting in increased student learning. The question many educators now face is no longer "why use data?" but rather "how can it be used to improve student learning?" With the passage of No Child Left Behind, data collection, analysis and reporting have become even greater imperatives. The data are powerful tools, but educators often need assistance in understanding how to use them appropriately to make decisions.

CoSN launched its newest leadership initiative, Data-Driven Decision Making: Vision to Know and Do (www.3d2know.org) in February 2003 to help educators realize the power of data to improve learning and teaching. Corporate partners of Vision to Know and Do are ETS, IBM, and SAS.

The Data-Driven Decision Making Webcast will:

  1. Highlight how some districts are successfully using data to realize change in student performance;
  2. Discuss CoSN's plans to move ahead with its leadership initiative;
  3. Identify the key issues that a district must address to use date effectively, and;
  4. Provide guidance on the pitfalls to avoid the abuse of data.
