Web 2.0 in Schools: Policy & Leadership

The World Wide Web has become a part of our everyday life. It revolutionized the way we work, play and learn. Web 2.0 applications (wikis, social networking, blogs, gaming, virtual reality, etc.) in particular have created a major shift in the way humans function, communicate and collaborate. This cultural shift is particularly apparent and significant for children, and youth who make heavy use of Web 2.0 in their everyday life outside school. However the use of Web 2.0 inside the classrooms is severely limited.

CoSN's Web 2.0 in Schools: Policy & Leadership initiative is based on the recognition that Web 2.0 tools provide powerful learning resources for our children and thus prepare them for the world beyond the classroom. The purpose of this initiative, which is sponsored by The Digital Media and Learning Initiative
from  The John  D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is to assist schools to adapt to this new reality.

Objectives:

  • Disseminate information on Web 2.0 and participatory learning relevant to the roles of the three key district level administrators (superintendents, curriculum directors, and technology directors).
  • Develop, construct and provide resources and tools for administrators that are responsive to the critical policy and organizational challenges which need to be addressed to achieve participatory learning.
  • Distribute information about innovative use of Web 2.0 applications in schools in other nations and assist in establishing linkages between U.S. educations and international colleagues.

Leadership for Web 2.0 in Education: Promise and Reality Report

This report documents the beliefs, perspectives, and practices of educational administrators which help or hinder effective use of Web 2.0 in K-12 education.  The study collected data from nearly 1,200 school administrators on the role of Web 2.0 in American schools and was made possible by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
