A Cybersecurity Framework for Education

With cybersecurity threats to schools continuing to escalate and existing standards often too complex or costly for K–12 environments, CoSN is stepping forward to lead the next phase of the Cybersecurity Rubric. Originally developed by ClassLink and a coalition of education organizations through the Cybersecurity Coalition for Education (CC4E), the Rubric provided a much-needed, practical framework tailored specifically to schools. CoSN is grateful for the strong foundation they established and is now ready to scale this work, expand supports for districts, and strengthening cybersecurity readiness across K–12 education nationwide.

Your Path to Improved Cybersecurity

The Cybersecurity Rubric (CR) for Education is a powerful self-assessment tool that helps education leaders evaluate their current practices. Based on the Cybersecurity Framework for Education, the CR helps schools gain a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to improve their defenses and safeguard against threats.

Know Where You Stand With Cybersecurity

The CR is aligned with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework. Based on a Maturity Model, the rubric is a roadmap for organizations to assess and continuously improve their level of proficiency in NIST-aligned domains.

Use a Tool Built for Education

Written in easy-to-understand language, the CR is based on education interpretations of cybersecurity standards. The rubric provides key guidance on what to look for when evaluating how well your school meets the standards.

Create a Plan for Continuous Improvement

When you finish your assessment, you gain a complete picture of where your school stands with cybersecurity preparedness. Strengths and weaknesses are clear, and you know where you need to invest to improve.
