Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSN (the Consortium for School Networking), issued the following statement on the new student home digital access report published today by the Institute of Education Sciences’ (IES) National Center for Education Statistics:

“While long overdue, we are pleased that the Department of Education has issued this crucial report. As CoSN, the Alliance for Excellent Education and other leading education organizations underscored in a coalition letter to IES in January, far too many students lack access to the connectivity needed for learning outside the classroom today.

“America’s ‘homework gap’ is a 21st-century civil rights issue that is affecting an entire generation of our youth. This reality cannot be neglected. The report’s findings should help us make meaningful progress on closing the divide and ensure students in every community are getting the support they need.

“We look forward to reviewing the report in greater depth and using the results to inform the ongoing policy discussion.”
