Deer Park Joins Six Other Texas School Districts in Commitment to Safeguarding Student Data Privacy
Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2023) – CoSN today awarded the Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal to the Deer Park Independent School District, located in Deer Park, TX. The TLE Seal is a national distinction awarded to school districts that demonstrate a tangible commitment to protecting student data through modern, rigorous policies and practices.
The TLE Seal Program requires school systems to have implemented high standards for student data privacy protections around five core practice areas: Leadership, Business, Data Security, Professional Development and the Classroom.
Commending Deer Park ISD’s achievement, Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSN, welcomed the district to the growing community of Trusted Learning Environment Seal recipients. Krueger stated, “We celebrate Deer Park ISD’s achievement of the TLE Seal. Their dedication serves as an inspiration for K-12 educational institutions to actively engage in safeguarding student data privacy.”
Deer Park ISD joins a select group of school districts from diverse settings, encompassing small, large, urban and rural communities. Of note, six Texas school districts have secured the TLE Seal, validating their establishment of mature student data privacy practices and their commitment to ongoing improvement.
“Having a profound commitment to cybersecurity and data privacy is a must for public schools. We have a responsibility to protect the data of our employees and students,” said Stephen Harrell, Deer Park ISD Superintendent.
“Today, school districts face a great challenge when it comes to protecting and storing sensitive data. Deer Park ISD is excited to join forces with other TLE Seal recipients in reaching the gold standard in terms of our commitment to protecting student data,” said Chris Davis, Deer Park ISD Cybersecurity Specialist.
“It is a privilege for Deer Park ISD to receive CoSN’s Trusted Learning Environment Seal, solidifying our place among the esteemed school districts nationwide. Drawing from those who have pioneered before us, we have set a strong foundation of data security, privacy and digital ethics,” said Dr. Kari Murphy, Deer Park ISD Chief Technology Officer.
The CoSN Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal Program is the nation’s only data privacy framework for school systems, focused on building a culture of trust and transparency. The TLE Seal was developed by CoSN in collaboration with a diverse group of 28 school system leaders nationwide and with support from AASA, The School Superintendents Association, the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) and ASCD. School systems that meet the program requirements will earn the TLE Seal, signifying their commitment to student data privacy to their community. TLE Seal recipients also commit to continuous examination and demonstrable future advancement of their privacy practices. cosn.org/trusted
