Technology plays a critical role when it comes to school districts assuring that equitable learning opportunities are accessible for ALL students, especially those with disabilities, learning differences, and English language learners, as well as students from lower socio-economic communities. In addition to making certain that all students have access to their needed course content and tools, school leaders need to ensure that the information they provide to the public, parents, guardians, and staff is readily accessible on any technology device. The needs inherent in guaranteeing accessibility for all go beyond meeting the legal requirements defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The accessibility policies and practices school leaders implement must be consistently vocal and visible to all within the communities they serve.
In this edLeader Panel, two leading-edge superintendents join with the director of technical assistance at CAST (originally known as the Center for Applied Special Technology) in an interactive discussion around the strategies used to successfully lead accessibility for all. Training procedures for providing teachers and staff with the skills to effectively leverage technology to assist students, parents, guardians, and staff will be reviewed.
This edLeader Panel is of particular value to superintendents, K-12 school and district leaders, and aspiring school leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions to the panelists during the live broadcast.
About the Presenters
Dr. Baron R. Davis is Superintendent of Richland School District Two in Columbia, South Carolina. He is the first Black superintendent in the district’s 96-year history. Discovering his passion and purpose early, Dr. Davis has been a trailblazer for public education for over two decades. Using personal experiences, dating back to growing up in public housing, he assesses needs and creates innovative structures to achieve goals of equity and excellence. He has made increasing recruitment and retention of male teachers of color a priority by launching the Premier 100 initiative.
Dr. Davis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from Francis Marion University. From the University of South Carolina, he earned master’s degrees in school counseling and educational administration, and Educational Specialist and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in educational counseling. He holds superintendent, school counseling, secondary principal, and secondary supervision certifications. In addition to his formal educational training, Dr. Davis has participated in and completed numerous educational leadership programs.
Dr. Susan Enfield is Superintendent for the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada. Serving over 62,000 students across more than 100 schools, Washoe County is the second-largest district in the state. Prior to Washoe, Dr. Enfield spent a decade serving as Superintendent for Highline Public Schools outside Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Enfield began her career in education as a high school English, ELL, and journalism teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. She later served as Chief Academic Officer and interim Superintendent for Seattle Public Schools. She was named the 2022 Washington State Superintendent of the Year by the Washington Association of School Administrators, and the 2018 Superintendent of the Year by the National School Foundation Association.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Enfield has earned master’s degrees from Stanford and Harvard University. She also holds a doctoral degree in administration, planning, and social policy from Harvard’s Urban Superintendents Program.
Cynthia Curry is CAST’s Director of Technical Assistance and Principal Investigator and Project Director for the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials (AEM Center), funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She leads a national initiative to create systems change across early childhood, K-12, higher ed, and workforce development to ensure that learners with disabilities who need high-quality accessible educational materials and technologies receive them in a timely manner. Cynthia has enjoyed diverse roles for promoting accessibility and Universal Design for Learning, including as a middle and high school science teacher, statewide technology integration mentor, trainer and technical assistance provider, teacher education faculty, instructional designer, and disability services coordinator. In her current position, she oversees CAST’s two technical assistance centers that build the capacity of education agencies to improve educational outcomes for learners with disabilities.
About the Host
Ann McMullan is Project Director for CoSN’s EmpowerED Superintendents Initiative. Ann served as Executive Director for Educational Technology in Klein ISD near Houston, Texas until September 2013, when she and her family moved to Los Angeles, California. For 16 years Ann led the district team that provided professional development on technology and 21st century instructional strategies to 4,000 educators serving 50,000 students. She was co-chair of the Texas Education Technology Advisory Committee which developed the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology.
Today, Ann works as a public speaker, writer, and consultant focused on leadership to meet the needs of today’s students. Ann serves on the edWeb.net Advisory Board, ClassLink’s Senior Advisors Group, and is a founding member of ERDI’s EdLeader Alliance. She also volunteers as a leadership consultant with Executive Service Corps of Southern California, serving non-profit associations. Ann is co-author of Life Lessons in Leadership, available on Amazon.com.
