CoSN Statement on U.S. Department of Education Announcement

We are profoundly concerned by the announcement made on November 18, 2025, regarding dismantling core components of the U.S. Department of Education and scattering critical offices across multiple agencies. Students, families, and educators rely on the U.S. Department of Education every day for critical services; dispersing these services will make it difficult for stakeholders to navigate resources at the federal level.

Fragmenting the mission of the U.S. Department of Education across the federal government risks weakening the coordination, expertise, and accountability on which our nation’s schools depend. This move sends the wrong signal about our nation’s commitment to public education.

CoSN stands with educators, leaders, and families across the country who are worried about what this means for the future of our schools. We will continue to advocate for a strong, coherent federal role in education that supports innovation, protects student rights, and ensures that every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
