CoSN today issued two member exclusive briefs, including a publicly available summary, on the fundamentals of privacy and online tracking for school technology leaders.

The first report details the use of online cookies and tracking technologies and explains the implications for school privacy. The second brief outlines Google Analytics – the widely used free service that measures and captures website and app activity.

“Online tracking and school privacy have become intertwined issues in school districts. There is an increasing range of tracking technologies used in a variety of ways, which has muddled the landscape for schools. The new briefs clarify these important matters and give school leaders helpful ways to handle both,” said Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSN.

In addition to clearly articulating the world of tracking, the briefs deliver best practice guidance on how to effectively use trackers and Google Analytics. This includes performing a privacy inventory, creating an organizational policy for embedded content, clearly disclosing the presence of tracking in privacy policies, paying attention to Google Analytics settings, as well as other important good practices.

The briefs are published as part of CoSN’s Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning initiative. The vendor neutral initiative is sponsored by FileWave, McGraw-Hill and Microsoft.
