What School System Tech Leaders Need to Know
What is IT Asset Management?
IT asset management is the practice of actively identifying, inventorying, documenting and managing technology assets throughout the lifecycle of the asset, from purchase and implementation to decommissioning and disposal.
Why is IT asset management essential to cybersecurity?
Why? Simply put, an organization has to know what hardware and software assets they have in order to protect those assets. This complies with what the Center for Internet Security (CIS) recommends; that the top two steps any organization can take to protect and manage their assets and improve their cybersecurity approach are to:
- Inventory and control hardware assets, and
- Inventory and control software assets. Hardware and software inventories provide clarification and documentation of the district’s technology footprint. This is a starting point for identifying which assets are most critical, determining risks to those assets, and planning for the protection of those assets. An inventory is an extremely important input into risk assessment and is also the first step in asset management.
Once assets are inventoried, they can be proactively managed to protect the assets from attacks, damage, loss or destruction and enhance the cybersecurity stance of the district.
