Washington, D.C. (August 14, 2024) – As schools across the nation gear up for the 2024–2025 academic year, CoSN is poised to guide K-12 technology leaders through the evolving landscapes of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, privacy and leadership development.
Embracing AI and Innovation
In a rapidly changing technological landscape, CoSN is at the forefront of helping districts leverage AI and other innovations. Key resources, such as the 2024 Driving K-12 Innovation report and the 2024 Accelerating Innovation guide, provide actionable steps tailored to the unique needs of each district. Through its partnership with the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS), CoSN offers the K-12 Generative AI (Gen AI) Readiness Checklist, the K12 Generative AI Maturity Readiness Assessment and the CoSN/CGCS K-12 Gen AI Maturity Tool. Additional free AI resources are available on the CoSN website.
Strengthening Cybersecurity
CoSN is committed to ensuring that all districts — regardless of size or resources — are aware of and prepared for cybersecurity challenges. Districts can enhance their cybersecurity posture by aligning with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, vetting vendors through the K-12CVAT during procurement and developing a Learning Continuity Plan/Business Continuity Plan. CoSN offers a wealth of resources and professional learning opportunities tailored for K-12 EdTech leaders and their teams to assist in planning, prevention and preparation, implementation, and processes for responding to cybersecurity incidents.
Prioritizing Privacy
With the increasing use of AI in classrooms, protecting student data privacy is paramount. CoSN offers a Student Data Privacy Toolkit to guide technology leaders as well as additional resources tailored for K-12 schools and districts. It is crucial that leaders regularly update and enhance their privacy training programs to maintain their effectiveness.
Advancing Student Data Privacy Through the TLE Seal
Recognition through the CoSN Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal program focuses on helping K-12 school districts develop and maintain secure digital learning environments. The program provides districts with a framework and guidelines to protect student data and ensure privacy, helping districts understand key privacy law, implement best practices and demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding student data. To achieve the TLE Seal, districts must demonstrate adherence to privacy standards across various areas, such as data security, governance policies and community engagement.
Cultivating Leadership
Strong leadership is essential for successful technology initiatives. The CoSN EmpowerED Superintendents initiative, the CTO Academy for K-12 Early Career and Aspiring CTOs and the Certified Education Technology Leader (CETL®) program aim to develop both current and future EdTech leaders, equipping them to spearhead innovation and maintain effective tech infrastructures in their districts. The CoSN Peer Review program further supports districts by offering expert evaluations of their educational technology strategies, providing practical recommendations to improve technology utilization and advance educational objectives.
“CoSN provides truly amazing resources, particularly in the realm of professional learning, which empowers educational technology leaders to effectively navigate and leverage technology to enhance learning environments in K-12 districts,” said Dr. Jill Brown, Director of Professional Learning, CoSN.
CoSN has long advocated for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allocate funding for cybersecurity services and equipment to protect the broadband networks of schools and libraries. The association continues to support the FCC’s initiatives aimed at promoting digital equity and providing educational institutions with the resources necessary to ensure secure and reliable connectivity for students and educators.
